Presenting Issues is the most common and professional term used by counselors, psychologists, and therapists as to why people seek therapy and counseling. It refers to the specific problems, symptoms, or concerns that bring a person to therapy.
Example: “The client’s presenting issues include anxiety, relationship conflict, and difficulty sleeping.”
Counseling Goals or Treatment Focus Areas are the broad categories or life areas the person wants to improve through therapy.
Common categories include: Emotional health (anxiety, depression, trauma), Relationships and communication, Self-esteem and identity, Stress or burnout, Grief and loss, Behavior change or addiction recovery.
